Sex Addiction Counselling

Sex and/or porn addiction (sometimes referred to as Sexual Compulsive Behaviour) is a very real problem and can have far reaching and devastating effects on people's lives.

It's not uncommon for people to conjure up certain negative images in mind when they hear the term 'sex addiction' and it is often associated with the media portrayal of the likes of celebrities with 'high sex drives'.  However, this is far from the case.   The behaviour is often motivated by underlying difficulties or distractions from life's problems and can often be a way of managing difficult feelings such as depression, anxiety or low self-esteem.

The addiction or compulsion itself is not defined by particular sexual activities rather it is a term used to describe any sexual behaviours that feel out of a control and have a significant negative impact on a person's life and wellbeing.

So what might sex addiction look like?

  • Sexual behaviours or impulses feel out of control

  • Thinking about or doing something illegal to engage in certain sexual activities

  • Sex in higher risk situations for example; with strangers or sex workers or in more risky places

  • Excessive porn use

  • Excessive or compulsive masturbation

  • Engaging in sex but no longer experiencing it as pleasurable

  • Increase in certain behaviours – use of escorts, sex clubs, cyber sex

  • Sexual activities start interfering with other commitments/responsibilities e.g. health, finances, work, family/relationships

  • Difficulty forming/maintaining loving and close relationships

  • Secrecy, irritability, avoidance, isolation, preoccupation

It is reported 1 in 20 people struggle with sexual behaviour that feels outside of their control. This is a growing problem affecting ordinary people. Yet, despite certain behaviours causing significant problems in their lives, the secrecy and shame that often surrounds it makes it difficult for people to seek help and support.

Please don't feel you have to cope with this on your own, effective help and support is available to help you instigate change and get back in control of the life you want to live.  If you would like to arrange a free 10 minute telephone consultation or have any questions, please don't hesitate to complete the contact form.
